Wynn Resorts and Related Companies have submitted plans for a large-scale integrated resort and casino complex in New York City's Hudson Yards district. The proposed project, called Wynn New York City, would be located on the western side of Manhattan near the Hudson River. The development includes a 2 million-square-foot gaming facility, hotel, luxury retail space, dining options, and an expansive public park named Hudson Green. Wynn Design and Development, responsible for designing Wynn Resorts' casino properties, would oversee the project's aesthetics.
The proposal has sparked opposition from a newly formed community group called the High Line, which is concerned about preserving the neighborhood's historic character and views. Some politicians are also hesitant to introduce gaming into their constituents' backyard.
Related Companies and Wynn Resorts emphasize the benefits of their project, including economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. The companies estimate that constructing Wynn New York City would create 35,000 construction jobs and 5,000 permanent union jobs once operational. These jobs could boost income tax collections for a state heavily reliant on this revenue source. Additionally, the project is designed to comply with approved uses in the 2009 zoning plan for Hudson Yards West. The companies believe their proposal will ultimately generate significant community benefits.
However, New York regulators have not yet initiated the bidding process for the three downstate casino permits expected to be awarded. That process is anticipated to extend well into 2025 or possibly beyond.
