Science and Technology (S&T) division of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to improve cybersecurity and enhance the nation's critical infrastructure resilience. One recent application, developed in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is an AI-based system that can autonomously respond to a cyber incident and mitigate it.
Coulter, a spokesperson for S&T, explains that the outcome of this effort will be that the organization will be able to use AI as a tool to create more secure components during the design phase, as well as analyze systems while they are in operation, thereby identifying potential weak points.
This article is the first in a new feature series dedicated to S&T's AI/ML research and development efforts. Additional information can be found on the "Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems" webpage.
